This is the story of Andrew Gatenby and his family who arrived in Van Diemen’s Land almost 200 years ago. He established a successful farm,
Barton, built the Pennyroyal Mill and never regretted the move.
This book relives the courage, the commitment, the hardships, the successes and failures of seven generations of one farming family living on the Pennyroyal Creek, Tasmania, starting with the interaction between the early settlers and the first inhabitants of the land, who must be acknowledged.
Their lives revolved around day to day farming activities, which Andrew’s son George Gatenby described in painstaking detail in diary entries made daily over his long life. The family had extensive engagement with convicts, fellow free settlers, doctors, clergy, government officials and the occasional encounter with bushrangers. Stately homes were built, some of which stand today.
The detail in this book has been drawn from a unique family archive of diaries, letters, documents, account books, maps and photographs dating from 1823 to 1920 which were carefully curated by Barney Gatenby so that the story of such an interesting family could one day be told.
We hope you enjoy The Gatenby Saga, recalling the life of the Gatenbys along the Pennyroyal Creek, as much as we did in researching and writing the book.
